Business email basics: domain, mailbox, DNS and delivery
Professional email involves more than creating an inbox. Here is the simple version of what is happening underneath.
The domain
The domain is the part after the @ sign. You need control of its DNS records so mail can be directed to the right service.
The mailbox
A mailbox is the actual account that stores and receives messages. Hosting control panels such as Plesk can create and manage mailboxes for hosted domains.
MX records
MX records tell other mail servers where incoming messages for your domain should be delivered.
SPF, DKIM and DMARC
These DNS records help receiving mail systems understand which servers are allowed to send mail for the domain and how messages should be authenticated or handled.
Do not change DNS blind
Before moving a website or email service, record the existing mail setup. The safest migration is the one where you know which system is responsible for the website and which is responsible for email before changing anything.
