How much web hosting does a small business actually need?

Choosing hosting is easier when you start with what the website does rather than a list of server specifications.

Start with the job of the website

A simple brochure site has different needs from a site that brings in daily enquiries or hosts several business projects. Start with how important the site is to the working day, how many sites you need to host and how much help you want.

The cheapest plan is not automatically wrong

If you have one straightforward website and are comfortable managing common settings yourself, an entry-level hosting plan can be entirely sensible. Paying more only makes sense when you need more capacity, more sites or more support.

Support is part of the product

Two hosting plans can have similar technical features but feel completely different when something breaks. Decide whether you are happy to use a control panel yourself or whether being able to ask someone is worth paying for.

Backups and SSL should be basics

A business site should not treat HTTPS or routine backups as exotic extras. Check that SSL is available and understand how backups are taken and how restores work.

For TopSpec customers

Essential is aimed at one straightforward site. Business adds room for up to three sites and priority help. Managed adds a more hands-on service layer for people who would rather not handle routine technical jobs.
